In fact, Yamauchi says that although it's possible for future iterations of the GT series to feature better graphics, he doubts they'll surpass the realism of GT3's physics model. It's obvious that Yamauchi's favorite element of GT3 isn't the actual racing gameplay or lush visuals-it's the religious attention to detail paid to each vehicle's road handling. Grinning, he launches his car head-on into a crush of oncoming racers. He's having fun, oblivious to the spectacle of the auto show and the rattling trains above that are so loud we have to reask questions after they pass. (We're aching to challenge him to a race, but the two-player mode hasn't been implemented in the version he's playing.) Yamauchi's screwing around with different cars, experimenting with their handling, burning out, slamming on the brakes, laying circles of charred rubber on the track. We give him room so he can show off for the Japanese camera crew. He's back at the Mazda booth playing his game at a PS2 kiosk. "Notice how the brake discs heat up and glow," Yamauchi says, fresh from his wanderings of the show floor. Despite all these effects, and despite the game's vertical resolution being twice that of any PS2 title so far, GT3 runs at a flawlessly smooth framerate. ("It's hard to tell if you're watching a real TV broadcast or not sometimes." Yamauchi says.) And you haven't witnessed the newly included weather effects, which add reflective puddles and blowing mist-not to mention an element of slippery-when-wet danger-to the game. During replays, the camera keeps your car in sharp focus, while objects and autos in the distance blur slightly. You haven't seen the focus effects in action. And you've no doubt seen the stunning detail of the car models-so detailed, in fact, that you can see engine parts beneath hood mesh.īut you haven't seen the heat haze that hangs above the track. You probably know all about the real-time lighting, shadows and environmental mapping on the game's cars drive under a bridge and you see it reflected in your glossy paint job. Without a doubt, the "artistic presentation" of this game blows the doors off anything we've seen so far on the PS2. "We've lost him for hours at a time." According to Imasaki, Yamauchi is a skilled photographer, especially when it comes to cars-and that skill, he says, comes through in the sleek, artistic presentation of the vehicles in GT3. producer of GT3 and our translator for the interview. "He's been doing that all day," says Taku Imasaki, the U.S. Sure enough, as soon as we're through with our photos and questions, Yamauchi grabs a camera from an associate and disappears into the show-floor throng for 45 minutes. We're standing between him and auto nirvana, and we feel bad about it. It's obvious he can't wait for a break in this interview so he can zip back to the show floor and breathe in as much of the atmosphere as possible. Yamauchi is a legendary car freak, and this show is his playground. But it's not this high-octane atmosphere, the maddeningly repetitive Mazda theme tune, the camera crew here to film Yamauchi for Japanese TV, or the overwhelming din of passing trains overhead that's making our interview so difficult. Jeep's booth, for instance, features a massive waterfall that spells out slogans and logos in torrents of falling water. ![]() Ghosts has no wildcard mechanic, thankfully, meaning that players will be able to spend the same amount of points whether they use a more traditional build or something completely original.Ĭall of Duty: Ghosts introduces five new game types, the most interesting of which is Cranked. To add extra perks or weapon attachments in Black Ops II, you’d have to spend one of your ten allotted points on ‘wildcards’, which in turn reduced the amount of weapon attachments or perks that you could use. While Black Ops II afforded a lot of the same flexibility, it also penalized players for using obscure class constructs. And that’s a good thing.īuilding on Black Ops II’s ‘Pick 10’ setup, Call of Duty: Ghosts offers the most flexible class systems in the series, encouraging players to explore a wide array of perk and weapon combinations. The change forces you to be methodical in your deployment blindly lobbing grenades towards the enemy spawn will no longer guarantee a kill. Of course, explosives still have their uses, rooting out players behind cover and clearing out capture points. Much like kill streaks, explosives are often fun to use, but being sent to kingdom come by a randomly tossed grenade is hardly enjoyable. In another effort to refocus the game’s attention towards its shooting mechanics, Ghosts tweaks explosive damage slightly reducing the lethal radius of grenades and equipment (i.e. Skilled players will still be able to rack up impressive kill counts, but you won’t be able to simply acquire a few kills and rely on your kill streaks to do the rest. Many of the lethal streaks such as the remote control attack drone require a deft touch. While using devastating air support to reign down terror on the enemy’s spawn can be enjoyable, it’s infinitely more frustrating for those on the receiving end. The rebalanced streaks help to lower Call of Duty: Ghosts’ barrier to entry, making the game friendlier to newcomers and removing one of the series’ more frustrating elements. With the majority of the game’ streaks being stagnant, working with your teammates to consider when and when to deploy these rewards is paramount to success. UAVs have been swapped out for Sat Coms – stationary recon turrets – which are less efficient than UAVs at first, but become more powerful when many of them are deployed in unison. Call of Duty: Ghosts tones down the impact of kill streaks by replacing many of the game’s rewards with weaker ground-based variants. The days where kill streaks - rewards obtained by amassing consecutive kills - dominate player matches are long gone. But you need only to glance towards the sky to see that not everything is the same. ![]() There must be an easier way to back up one's data (without buying more kit) but thank heavens I did because the hard disk failure wasn't as catastrophic as it could have been. I've tried a couple of different makes of DVDs and it still plays up. Plus RecordNow is still being temperamental and never seems to work first time, necessitating taking the DVD out, wiping it, putting it back in again and praying. ![]() Incidentally, any CDs or DVDs created with the DLA software from my old hard drive cause a blue screen as soon as I put them in the drive now. It takes a little longer than DLA but at least my computer still talks to me afterwards. Since I have replaced the hard disk, I haven't bothered trying to use the DLA software and only use RecordNow. In the end, the problem was solved for my by a complete hard disk failure and a permanent blue screen. However, I did use Task Manager to exit anything that looked like it might cause a problem, plus made sure that Windows Explorer was no longer trying to display to contents of the DVD I was ejecting - to no avail. In my case, because I was using the DLA software, there was nothing to exit as such. Glad to hear it's not just me who's having problems. As I recall, you need to change somehting in Norton to not scan the burner drive, or something to that effect. If anyone can help, I'd really love to hear from you! From other posts I've seen, I'd say it is a Norton issue. I've spent several hours rebooting, trying again, rebooting etc but if I'm on a fruitless quest, it would be nice to know rather than keep banging my head against the wall! Is this due to Norton? Is there a solution or do I have to use RecordNow (seems to work okay but the DLA software was nice and quick and easy). Bean is also similar to early silent films, relying purely upon physical comedy with Mr. ![]() Atkinson also cited the influence of Peter Sellers, who had previously played similar "fumbling fool" characters, notably Hrundi Bakshi in The Party (1968) and Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther films. The character's name was not decided until after the first episode had been produced a number of other vegetable-influenced names such as "Mr. ![]() As it turned out, Atkinson's act at the festival was a test platform for his character and he wanted to see how his character's physical comedy would fare on an international stage with a non-English speaking audience. Having no French dialogue in his act at all, programme coordinators could not understand why Atkinson wanted to perform on the French bill instead. When programme coordinators were scheduling him into the festival programme, Atkinson insisted that he perform on the French-speaking bill rather than the English-speaking programme. One of Bean's earliest appearances occurred at the " Just for Laughs" comedy festival in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 1987. ![]() A similar character called Robert Box, also played by Atkinson, appeared in the one-off 1979 ITV sitcom Canned Laughter which also featured routines used in the motion picture in 1997. A sketch featuring Bean was shown at the Edinburgh Fringe in the early 1980s. Bean was developed while Rowan Atkinson was studying for his master's degree in electrical engineering at The Queen's College, Oxford.
